Land Rights in the Central African Republic
Spectrum Media developed a successful communication strategy and public awareness campaign to help diamond miners in this African nation better identify and secure their rights to their land. The campaign promoted and helped expand an innovative methodology used by USAID. The process combined community mapping, development and dispute resolution techniques with GPS devices to identify and precisely locate individual claims as a step towards affirming the miner’s property rights in a statutory context. This process had a transformative effect on the miner’s approach to their work, their relationship to the land, and their economic prospects. The work is continuing to be implemented in other poor rural areas where families are wholly dependent on land for food and income.
